Tattnall Square Academy officially opened its elementary school Makerspace October 2. The opening marked the culmination of a vision that began last spring, and students were able to use the new space Tuesday. Part of the school’s STEM program, the Makerspace is an exploratory class for students in 1st through 6th grades, encompassing nearly 200 students.
Science lab instructor Julie Scott said the new Makerspace “reflects a passion of mine – to foster student-led creativity, exploration and innovation. It was exciting to see the dream finally come to fruition and witness how excited the students were to have a place like this made especially for them.”
What is a Makerspace exactly? Tattnall’s Makerspace has the following goals:
- to provide a space that fosters students’ natural curiosity and desire to explore and create
- to provide a safe environment to try new things and learn from mistakes
- to introduce unique opportunities in STEM areas such as robotics, computer programming and engineering that will promote students’ awareness of and interest in STEM careers
- to foster teamwork and collaboration
